It was a real delight to receive this news. A friend of mine from Russian city of Samara dropped a line a couple days ago tipping me to check out their web-site where they posted a bunch of photographs showing a progress of one long-run project. Read the rest of this entry »

Valentin, a friend of mine, an ex-helicoter pilot from Siberia, and a former flight college mate, has just granted an access to his photo-archive. I almost have no words to express how much I appreciate such a deed on his part, and - how excited I am.. He has accomplished an effort of epic proportion, having scanned old negatives. And then he, driven by his good faith, uploaded them on the Internet. Read the rest of this entry »
Greg’s Files. Arctic Chapter-II
Blogroll, Times&Spaces, People, Antarctica: Greg's Files, Bush Operation on both sides of Arctic No Comments »So, here’s an ‘excerpt’ from ‘Arctic Chapter’ of Greg’s ‘Antarctica Files’, as it written by Greg himself. See also a previous post with some sort of ‘preface’ to it.
I went through my log books to get more detail on where those photos were taken, but I didn’t keep much detailed information, I don’t know exactly where all the photos were taken for example, but made a pretty good guess.
Photo 1. Taken in the central Arctic on a flight from Resolute Bay to Inuvik. I surprised at this polar bear.. Read the rest of this entry »
“Uh, it’s so much better here!”, I though as we got inside, away from cold, into a warm lobby at the ‘Stanford Inn’. A few minutes passed before I had entirely shaken off some ’stiffness in body parts’ acquired during a brief but overwhelming exposure to ‘minus 38 C’ outside, and started relaxing. As my crew mates were checking in at the front desk, I filled leisure minutes by casual observation of the hotel’s interior. Read the rest of this entry »
Flying in Kuban

What a beautiful dawn! Mornings like that are a special feature, highlighting an outstanding character of the Kuban region (oficially - ‘Krasnodarsky Krai’) located in Southern part of Russia. I wrote already a few dedicated posts about this country, and there seems to be a good reason to write one more. Yes, it was a pleasure to receive a mail from an old friend of mine living in Kuban. Aleksei (one more Alexei here and around!
) wished all good things to us in the New Year Eve, and ‘briefed’ me on what’s going on in his ’sophisticated household’. Read the rest of this entry »

Just got an e-mail from another ‘correspondents’ in Russia. Dima, a guy I’ve been intermittently corresponding with for the last two years, wrote on some achievements he accomplished lately going on the road of ‘career flying’ - a walk of life he began not too long prior to the time we met on the Internet. Right now he’s undergoing a transition course for the Tupolev-154 type rating, and says chances are he might just ’seamlessly’ transfer to another training class - of English, and International flying regulations. Old Aircraft Resroration in Russia
Flickr, Editorial, People, Antarctica: Greg's Files No Comments »
A good news came from Russia. I’m in a search for more information now, but it seems they’ve brought one old aircraft restoration project to final stages of completeness. Quite an accomplishment, especially when you bear in mind the fact the General Aviation legislation environment existing in Russia is far from being ‘cozy’ and friendly toward the groups of aeronautical enthusiasts emerged there since the Soviet Union collapse. My best chum Sasha (’Shurik’) from our years at the Aktyubinsk Flight College has just turned 50. ‘Big Date’ caught him yesterday. Doesn’t look 50 on this pic though! Oh, in my opinion, he still looks on 25 at his 50
Haven’t seen him since the time of our graduation in 1983. Read the rest of this entry »
Siberia. Bush. Oil. Helicopters

If they asked me to find a proper image to convey the most essential idea of the ‘Bush Flying - Siberian Style“, I would undoubtedly choose this picture (by Misha). Because ‘a flying helicopter’ is a very common sight everywhere in Siberia, - “the bigger machine, the better”. They do everything, and it looks as if they’ve been there forever. Siberia - it is the ‘Mil-country’.
