Parade of Russian-made Aircraft in Toronto

Il-76TD-90VD, that’s how this new version of Il-76 was designated. Was lucky yesterday to get a few shots of the Volga-Dnepr’s Ilyushin-76 cargo plane in Toronto. Interestingly, these Ilyushins has been ‘haunting’ me since a while ago, and I even made a couple of posts, regarding them (28 January, on the one spotted in YYC, and the post of January 20, to which I was inspired by a quick marvel at the 76’s model at YEG airport) Read the rest of this entry »

Dash-8s of the Russian operator SAT

C-FOVO, one of the first three DHC-8-100 aircraft for Russian ‘Sakhalin Airways’ True, after that memorable ‘date’ in Calgary with a Canadian-built, Russian operated Dash-8, I picked up a bit of interest towards knowing more about SAT ‘Sakhalin Airways’. And it wasn’t for too long before some pieces of information started ’seeping through the Internet cobwebs’. Read the rest of this entry »

Ilyushin-76 cargo plane in YYC

Ilyushin-76 cargo plane in Calgary Browsing through tons of images taken within a couple of recent years, I found a few featuring an Ilyushin-76, when it rested for a while on the Calgary’s airport ramp in the end of 2007.

In one of the recent posts I mentioned this type, although put a remark that it is not the kind of plane you could see here often. At least not as often as it may be with a more ‘prominent’ Antonov-124. Read the rest of this entry »

Volga-Dnepr’s Ilyushin-76 in Edmonton

Blogroll, Editorial, From the Road No Comments »

Model of the Ilyushin-76 in the ‘Volga-Dnepr’ livery Spotted in a showcase at the departure level in the Edmonton International airport. Interestingly enough, I saw two real Ilyushin-76s at Edmonton not too long ago. One of them was wearing exactly the same livery, - of Russian cargo airline called ‘Volga-Dnepr’. Unfortunately, it was dark, and I didn’t have a chance to make a good shot of it. Read the rest of this entry »

Aircraft Bush Tires

Blogroll, Editorial, De-mythology No Comments »

Bush Tire on the Cub A quick remark following Greg’s comments on the the type of ‘landing gear solutions for bush planes. Not too often, but you can see them, ‘Bush Tires’, here in Alberta. The rationale is that, I believe, Alberta is more facilitated with decent aerodromes and airstrips than ‘truly bush’ countries like Alaska, NWT, or Yukon. However ‘relatively remote’ communities may be, they are still connected to the ‘rest of the world’ fairly well, and there’s a ground transport option available in many cases. Thus, I assume, folks put bush tires on their recreational planes mostly for the ‘kick of it’ :) Read the rest of this entry »

Greg’s Files. Arctic Chapter-II

Blogroll, Times&Spaces, People, Antarctica: Greg's Files, Bush Operation on both sides of Arctic No Comments »

So, here’s an ‘excerpt’ from ‘Arctic Chapter’ of Greg’s ‘Antarctica Files’, as it written by Greg himself. See also a previous post with some sort of ‘preface’ to it.

I went through my log books to get more detail on where those photos were taken,  but I didn’t keep much detailed information, I don’t know exactly where all the photos were taken for example, but made a pretty good guess.

A polar bear got a seal. However, scared by a low flying aircraft, had dropped it, and jumped into the water.. Well, the prize was way too high to forget about it easily.. As the bear got used to a buzz produced by the aircraft, it regained its coolness, and got back ashore to pick up its supper.  Photo 1. Taken in the central Arctic on a  flight from Resolute Bay to Inuvik. I surprised at this polar bear.. Read the rest of this entry »

Fixed Base Operator. Russia.

Yak-18T at Alexei’s home base As I wrote in a previous post: my friend Alexei is doing good as he deploys ‘a somewhat’ that in terms of North American General Aviation could be called a ‘Fixed Base Operator‘. I intentionally predicated the statement with ‘a somewhat‘, because you have to adjust the meaning of ‘commonly known things and notions’, when you try to find their equivalent in ‘Russia’s realities’. Mahogany An-2.

Blogroll, Editorial, From the Road No Comments »

An-2 put in the showcase Holly! Antonov-2 in Vancouver! Made of mahogany wood, though. And not quite as big as the real one. But as a matter of fact, this model can be found in Vancouver, at the ‘Aviation World‘ pilot supply shop that is situated near the YVR’s South Terminal, in the corner of Nr.2 and Gilbert roads.

Guest Experience

Enjoying a day in Banff. He’s got a chance to compare Rockies with Alps. We’ve got a guest, a young Russian pilot who came to visit us on his vacation. It seems Alexey enjoys exploring our country, and sure enough - takes lots of pictures ‘for the record’ :) Yes, he happened to be a photography enthusiast as well. Day before yesterday we went to the Banff national park, and it was obvious - the tranquilly of ‘winter Rockies’ in Banff and Lake Louis left him profoundly impressed. Read the rest of this entry »

‘EnerJet-101′. A plane for the Calgary start-up.

Blogroll, Flickr, Editorial 7 Comments »

‘C-GOEG’ registration implies something.. Maybe “GO, EnerJet!” Calgary airport is a sort of place where an ‘aviation aficionado’ - like one that is usually called a ’spotter’ - can expect any kind of surprise. Yet something inside of me resists to accept the fact ‘you are just one of them’. On the other hand, - and I should sincerely confess - I can’t withstand a temptation to stop by, and make a quick shot of ‘that interesting something’ the Calgary airport environment may dish out on you the other day.
