Over the U.S.A. To Cuba

Flight Tracker map of Flight 2390 from Calgary to Varadero

I got this map from FlightAware flight tracker web-site using a ‘print screen’ feature on my Mac. Them guys in Flight Aware might object to such a ‘freely’ use of their ’stuff’, but I’ll beg them pardon me.

Besides, I have a weak excuse that it was me too, who made an input in creating that fine track line over the American States. Then, I also put a link to their web-site. That they probably wouldn’t mind.

Unfortunately, from our navigation maps it is hard to say where we are flying over, as they don’t show such features as ’state, or province borders’. Even cities and towns aren’t featured on them.

At least here you can see what states in the U.S. we were flying across.

I wanted to show this map to my Flickr friend Sterling (who goes by ‘High Above Texas‘).

Although we didn’t ‘penetrate the ‘Sovereign State of Texas’ airspace this time (that was on another occasion), I know Sterling loves his country - and all the surrounding friendly states - and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t mind to help me out and name all the states our route is crossing.

We put our track over the U.S. first in Montana, I believe, then continued over the Dakotas, then.. I’m not sure. Florida was the last one (nice pass across the Florida Keys! - right in between ‘Marathon Key’, and ‘Key West’).

So, let’s start a geography lesson!

#1. I’m jealous that you get to fly into Cuba. I’ve always wanted to go there, stay in a hotel for a few days and smoke as many cigars as I could before turning green.

Florida, Alabama (looks like you clipped the southwestern tip of Georgia) Tennessee, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana.

I guess I could fly to CYYC, catch a flight to Cuba and smoke my cigars… Do they have any nice hotels there?

    Hey, ola!

Sure you can do Cuba via Canada. As far as I know, enough Americans do it routinely to call it ‘proven method’. I never stayed in Cuba overnight. Hotels (for foreign tourists) should be pretty decent. I see no reason why you shouldn’t try. We have more flights to Cuba from Toronto. Although, it would be a great honor for me if you proceeded via Calgary :)

Thank you for identing the states. Most of the flight over the U.S. was ‘on top of clouds’, only some 30 minutes before we reached the Gulf we began getting breaks in clouds. Dakotas were relatively clear too. Got a good look of ‘Bad Lands’.

Keys were looking awesome. I’ll post a few pics later.

Glad to see you here, you’re more than welcome,

    P.S.
Just finished ‘Our Man in Havana’, a classic by Graham Greene. Terrific reading.

Starting from top left after crossing into the U.S.,
Montana,North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri,Tennesse, Alabama, clipped a tiny piece of Georgia, and finally crossed over part of Florida. (only one Orville missed was Iowa but that’s easily done!). Cheers/Bill

    Thank you, Bill,
this is great. I recently stumbled upon a copy of ‘America’ magazine, and there was a brief outlook of the U.S. geography, - and states were grouped ‘region by region’.

I found it handy - if you want to memorize all the states - just follow the ‘regional break-down’: ‘New England, ‘Mid-Atlantic’, ‘The South’, ‘the Southwest’, ‘the Mountain Region’, ‘the Pacific Region’, ‘the Great Lakes and Great Plains’.

    Didn’t I miss something?
