Hawaii Impressions-II

One of the most common ‘reef fish species’ that can bee seen in the Hanauma Bay, ‘Orangespine Unicornfish’. Uh, seems like these underwater images taken by a very simple, $10-dollar camera turned out not too bad. Or, you would rather call them ’so-so’, but they are not as bad as you might expect from such a ‘low budget solution’. At least, I’ve been able to identify some of the fish captured on it in two days of Hanauma Bay snorkeling.

This one has not been identified yet.. I’m still working on figuring out what this one is.

Sure, at the beach they had posters for the curious wishing to get ‘an ident’ on what they might have happened to encounter in the sea. All fish had their names in Hawaiian too, and some of the names were quite long, ‘ab originally exotic’, and it would be a challenge to remember, or pronounce them :)

‘Parrot fish’ called locally ‘U’hu’. There’s a few kinds of them can be seen in Hanauma Bay waters Not all of them, though. For example, this Parrot fish‘ name sounds quite ‘minimalistic’ in Hawaiian - ‘U’hu‘. We saw a few of them, in different size. This one on the picture was quite a large specimen. Or, at least it looked way more larger than any fish hanging around. It didn’t appear to be too ’shy’ either, and allowed us to ’shadow’ her path quite close. When it would take bite on the coral, - apparently, trying to find some ‘nutrients’, - you could quite distinctly hear a scratching sound created by its jaws.
Uhu ‘is being fished’ I was shocked a bit though, when we accidentally discovered later that the Parrot fish may be a ‘food item’ itself. And not only for some other, more voracious marine creatures. People catch it for food too. “Hopefully, they haven’t got here that cheerful fellow we enjoyed to swim with!”, I thought dismally observing stalls full of fish in the Honolulu market :)

Gorgeous creature, in its own domain. Green Sea Turtle We were lucky to see a couple of sea turtles, and even take a few pictures of one of them. I tell you, it is a great, ‘inspiring’ experience to be nearby these gorgeous, free creatures in their own environment.

Soaring with turtles Vita, my wife, got so excited after she noticed what she then described a ‘glint of deep intelligence’ in the turtle’s eyes. Of course, she immediately set herself off for a ’round of socializing’ with the ‘lady’ (that was too her opinion of the turtle’s gender :) ). It took me not a small effort to discourage her from doing this :)

(to be continued..)
