Planes on Skis. And in the Winter

Spray of snow from ski-boards trailing the plane Just got a permission from an author of this picture to post it here. What a beauty! Such a nice visual compliment to a topic risen in the previous post. A shot of this departing An-2 was taken in Nar’yan-Mar, Arctic Russia.

As for geography, the region’s location is to the West of Ural Mountains, so, it is NOT Siberia. Nevertheless, the surrounding country would perfectly satisfy a most refined definition of ‘bush territory’. (”Because it Arctic, dude!”, one might say :) )

I’ll try to get some ‘meat’ about operations by the local aviation enterprises reaching the bush which lays across this region of Arctic Russia.

Departing Nar’yan-Mar from the ’snow runway’. An-2, RA-40942 on ‘board skis’

Back to the topic of skis that we touched yesterday,

Wheel-skis  A small wheel-ski on the tail, necessary part of the whole set

- I’ve never heard of the An-2s being operated in Russia on ‘wheel-skis’, though. The reason may be just as this: they don’t fly such a type of winter undercarriage whatsoever. The simple, proven ‘board skis’ only - that’s what they use, and I’ll bet, there’s not a great variety of models in use too, let alone - the ‘makes’. Although, I heard from a friend (who’s pictures taken in Yakutia we saw in this post) that there’s a choice of board skis manufactured in Poland, and operators like them better; besides, they weigh less than the ‘homemade’, by 35 kg (76 lbs).

Anyway, an ancient ‘rule of thumb’ - ‘everything in Russia is tending to hover on the brink of utter simplicity’ - seems to be working all right in this case :)
