“All of a sudden“, “Out of the blue, or nowhere“, “The calm before the storm“.. You know, I adore to learn new idiomatic English expressions. And in this post I’m going to solicit for some more. There’s a particular reason for such a request.
I want to tool up my lexicon for purposes of ‘fine writing’ on ‘Process Analysis”
In a first post on the topic I mentioned my acquaintance with this ‘arcane concept’, and its author, Eugeny Khokhlov. Obviously, a ‘process approach‘ in any kind of ‘cognitive activity‘ - for purposes of this article I limit an extent of such generalization to ‘any research work‘ that may be done in order to find out a ‘true cause of an incident, or accident‘ - is supposed to deal with a multitude of processes and factors relevant, or circumstantial to the even.
In works by Khokhlov there’s a distinct emphasis on a ‘Factor Effect Phenomenon‘, that may be observed when a few ‘sudden factors‘ ‘intrude’ in a normal flow of working processes. The point is, operator’s performance may be negatively affected in certain ways.
It is great, that there may be a ’safe heaven’ provided by a clause of respective SOPs, with means of which the operator responds and counteracts to the ’situation’. But, what if there’s none, or they localize a particular, ongoing even insufficiently, or, there’s an unforeseen combination of factors suddenly unleashed on a poor operator guy, who’s been knocked down to near a state of heart attack?
OK, I’ll stop my speculation right here
So, I’m asking my fellow pilots, my friends, to contribute to the blog with ‘rich and eloquent English’ most appropriate for describing situations and events of the same nature, i.e., when “All Hell Has Apparently Broken Loose” ![]()

“de arse fell out of ‘er” English/Newfounese for a sudden downdraft or loss of lift during the flare resulting in a hard landing.
“drive ‘er like ya stole ‘er” English/Newfounese for encouraging high speed limit of envelope type flight operation.

Cool!
I wish I could use those ‘gems’ on one of the next guys I’m flying with.. Not quite sure I’d like to get into respective situations though
