‘Polar Aviators’ on TV

Editorial, De-mythology, Clash, Antarctica: Greg's Files No Comments »

Red Tail Russian TV channel ‘NTV’ runs an interesting project called ‘Aviators. We watch this show at home via the Internet TV provider. I put here a few frames from footage of a recent episode about Russian/Soviet aviation in Antarctica. As you’ve been able to see for the date, I’m pursuing this theme in a category ‘Antarctica: Greg’s Files‘. Read the rest of this entry »

To Mexico

Blogroll, Editorial No Comments »

Mexican Cactus I’m flying to Mexico today. It is a four and a half-hour flight from Calgary to PVR, Puerto Vallarta, and back. If the weather is fine, I’ll try to make a few pictures. Last time (about a week ago) I flew to Mexico, it looked they were at the end of rainy season. All rivers looked swollen, and on the mountains’ hills, which are normally dressed into their tipicaly desert livery, everything was unusually green.. Read the rest of this entry »

Flight Instruments-II

‘Russian’ artificial horizon. AGD-1 Follow-up to a previous post:  just found a source where they give a reference pointing at some ‘differences’ in ‘Russian’ and ‘Western’ design of attitude indicators (artificial horizons).

The background display is coloured as in a Western instrument, but moves up and down only to indicate pitch. A symbol representing the aircraft (which is fixed in a Western instrument) rolls left or right to indicate roll angle“.

The quest is going on..

Artificial Horizon AGB-3K, “Made in the USSR”Evolutionary Aspects of Flight Instruments Designs‘ - how’s that sound? For example, - as a name of a subject matter in a course of aeronautical engineering. In my opinion, it may be quite an educative subject. Read the rest of this entry »

Western Built Aircraft in Russia

Blogroll, Editorial, Clash 9 Comments »

Yamal Airlines’ 737-500 A while ago I touched a topic of Western built transport category aircraft deployed in Russia. Specifically, with regard to Boeing. Numbers of planes made by Airbus, I believe, is pretty close to those representing Boeing in the totals for the entire Russian operators’ fleet. I’ll try to find some statistics on both. RIP to Flight 821 Investigation led by the Interstate Aviation Committee (MAK) is on. They found FDR, CVR on a site shortly after the accident of September 14th.. There was a report of these recording devices been badly damaged as a result of severe impact the aircraft suffered after ‘falling from the sky‘. Knowledge is Power

Lecture at AVLUGA “Knowledge is Power”.. Perhaps, many people here in the West have heard this expression, which is a quote from Sir Francis Bacon. What a powerful tool Google is, huh? :) I should put it honestly, I haven’t known much about Sir Francis Bacon until after I have made a search on this one. However, I heard the name years ago - from a course of history and philosophy (can’t you believe?! -  future pilots attending flight training institutions in the USSR had to satisfactory pass a mandatory course of the ‘Marxist-Leninist Philosophy’ in the educational curricula!) at our flight college. Simulator Training

Blogroll, De-mythology, Getting Wings, Clash No Comments »

‘Hulky Apparatus’ of the Second generation simulators. Still, helped to get job (of crew training) done. Another training session is coming up soon. In fact, - in the next week. Oh, time flies! Feel a bit stressed, as always. Uh, ‘flyable time’ - it is a different stance.

But as for simulators, and the history of the aviation ’simulated training’ - it is quite an educative topic. My first exposure to the ’simulated flight’ occurred at the Aqtyubinsk Flight College. Read the rest of this entry »

Radial Engine on Bush Planes

Radial engine demonstrator Radials are alive, and no doubt, - they will be.

I took this picture last summer at Red Lake, during their unique ‘Norseman Festival’. Town’s main street was closed for traffic, so the festival got some room for placing booths and kiosks of commercial participants. Read the rest of this entry »
