Truly Authentic Spotting in Toronto

Approach lights had been on well before sunset Today we sit in Toronto. The ‘Sheraton’ (that’s where we stay overnight) is located right at the airport. In some sense it is a convenient location, - especially when you checking out and go to work, or you are coming from somewhere, and checking in. All your ‘transfer hustle’ wouldn’t take a time any longer than just a few minutes to walk across the road on the ‘overpass’.

As one is at the airport already, with a few hours of leisure time, that one would think of a nice opportunity to watch and enjoy ’some aviation’, and at a place like Toronto’s airport ‘Pearson’, - there’s a lot of flying going on.

Today I wanted also to come out and see an Aeroflot crew, - their flight from Moscow was coming shortly after five o’clock. (However, it is a different story).

After that I was planning to go and have fun of ‘authentic aircraft spotting’.

The spotting location I was thinking about could be found at an ‘intersection of ‘Airport Road’ and final approach course for RW 23′ in YYZ.

Planes flying over it are very close to the RW threshold, and they zip across the road at very low altitude. Well, watch this:

I reached the spot just after sunset, and even though it was getting dark, the sky, as it was turning purple, orange, and red, gave another opportunity for a photographer to play with the sunset colors.

Look at that:

Uh, this is a Mac job :)

The volume of air traffic in and off RW 23 was pretty high, planes were coming and going at minimal intervals, and you could see a stretch of their lights far at the distance, as they were aligning  onto the long final.

As they approach closer, they appear to go faster. As you know, the majority of modern transport jets go at about 140 knots (260 km/h) in landing configuration.

Yeah, it was noisy too..

    Hey, Colin,

Nice to hear you, thank you for dropping by.
Yes, I’ve been once to that place before, it seemed people were hanging out at there purposely for spotting. But that was during the day, not the ‘after sunset’.

In Calgary we have an ‘organized’ place for spotters.

As far as you know, lately there’s been occasions of ‘cross-spotting’ (’aircraft-to-ground’) :)

great shot of the approach lighting masts. noticed Emerites and Jet Airways (India) for the first time last night at T1.

    Hi, Eric,

Great. It means Toronto is still attractive to the new entrants despite the humongous airport charges existing in YYZ :)
