Boeing-737-800 of Turkish Airlines. One year later I would be attending a training class in Calagary to fly the same type.. but at the moment nobody in the world would have dared to tell me this for sure :) It will take you approximately 2 hour 15-25 minutes before you reach Istanbul, Ataturk International (LTBA) from Moscow, Sheremetyevo (UUEE) on Tu-154. Of course, it depends on factors that are well known from navigation by air, such as true airspeed, wind, time on the approach, etc.

Here’s am excerpt from Great Circle Mapper showing a great circle flight path between the two.

Great Circle Distance between Sheremetyevo (UUEE) and Ataturk (LTBA) I put the ground speed value of 420 Kt, which reflects kinda typical ‘averaged’ ground speed for this plane, whereas cruise goes at Mach numbers in the area of M .80-84.

Unlike in Moscow, weather was nice in Istanbul.

Weather was nice in Istanbul Perhaps, this fellow could even tell that it was ‘rather warm’ outside on that day as he threw bags and boxes with ‘all kind of stuff’ into the plane’s pits :)

Aeroflot’s Tu-154M reg. RA-85669 As for the ‘turn time’, it may be said (by the ‘low cost operator’s standard’, though) : ‘no sweat’, - you won’t probably see turns faster than 1 hour 20 minutes, and it was not unusual to have turns on international flights even longer - up to two hours. Because of that, we often had opportunities to explore ‘duty free shops’ at different airports. That one at İstanbul Atatürk Airport was not too bad :)

737-800 of Kras (Inter Airlines), a Turkish charter operator Of course I also had some time to play with my new camera. Here’s a few images taken during this session of ‘ramp spotting’. This is a 737-800 of the Turkish charter operator Inter Airlines.

‘Onur Air’ Airbus-320 A-300 Freighter

I took a few shots of departing planes, tried serial shooting on the Cargolux’ 747: ‘nose gear retraction in progress’ :)

Cargolux’ 747 freighter: the nose gear well door open to let the gear in. Cargolux’ 747 freighter: nose gear door closed.

I noticed a military helicopter on the Southern ramp, it was hardly seen on the dark backgrounds

Looking South: something attracted my attention. It looks like Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk, isn’t it?

Also, an optical zoom x3 in Canon PowerShot A80 wasn’t enough for this kind of shooting.

And finally, it was time to go home.

Very interesting story and pictures…I’m looking forward to more :)

    Sure, Derin,

Do you have some interesting facts or stories to tell about the airport? Is that ‘Inter Airlines’ still in business?

  3. Derin Says:

Can’t think of any super exciting stories at the moment. There’s a great shopping mall to the west of the airport (next to the 18/36 runways) which has a great view of the airport but they don’t allow you to take pictures from there :( Inter Airlines is still in business, although I believe they only fly the A321 now. I haven’t seen anything other than A321s painted in their colors.

    Derin,

are you going to visit Istanbul in the near future? I’ll put an order on pictures of Aeroflot’s Tu-154s :) Or, chances are, they also have already switched to A-320 on this route.

  5. Derin Says:

I won’t be back in Turkey until next summer, I only go on summer vacation from school.
