Oshkosh in one Glance: the Barnstorm-Style-Show

Wingwalking is an old stunt. Yes, indeed, ‘wingwalking’ is an old stunt that goes back to the ‘era of ‘barnstorming’, - a period of post-WWI time when a ’surplus’ of retired from the war aviators appeared across the country, and being unable to find a more practical use for their skills and aeroplanes, they tried to make a buck performing for public with a variety of air stunts.

Here is a set of photographs I took during ‘Dave Dacy Airshows’ performance at Oshkosh. If you are interested in knowing more, you could easily find all the information related to the team of performers by a ‘googling’ the name, just LIKE THIS..

And now, ‘grip tighter on your armchair’, the ‘hair-rising show begins!’ :))

Taxiing to the departure end of the RW.. taxiing by..

Brave hero Tony Kazian - an unsettled passenger on the wing

as performers taxied to the starting point, a previous performer was finishing his program..

… it was the 1928 Travel Air “Mystery Ship” with Matt Younkin in it.

As a whole, the afternoon flying shows were non-stop, and very dynamic. One team would be finishing their part, and the next ones were already aligning to the ‘holding position’ spots to pick up the action pace..

And here we go!

Departure Take-off

A bi-plane rumbled by..

Then Tony the Wingwalker started freely moving around ALL parts of the plane in flight..

Under the upper wing.. somewhere else.. hopefully, he’s still ON the plane..

..on high speed passes at low altitude..

..literally ‘rising hair’ on heads of onlookers :)

    Hello Sergey,

Just getting caught up with your blog after a few days. Really enjoyed all your photos and commentary on Oshkosh. I have heard about this event, but never had an opportunity to attend it.

You sure did a great job with these barnstorming photos - I know how hard it is to do these fast moving shots.

    Hello, OldDogNewTrick,

    Thank you for coming.
Oshkosh is great and BIG. ‘Mindbugling’, - as some may say :) The barnstorming show was such a tiny part of the whole thing, though. Trust me, if you go, you’ll have tons of opportunities to ‘practice shooting skills on ‘fast moving objects’ :)

Meanwhile, - imagine us, members of the ‘RA-85123 Fan Club’ going to Oshkosh on our baby, huh?! What the heck, we should try to do this one day! :))

    Cheers,

    S.
