Oshkosh in one glance-I

Probably, the most known trivia about Oshkosh is that it is BIG.

Oh, yeah, it really is!

Spirit of Aviation

Just imagine, how much activity is going on simultaneously. And there’s no way to keep track of everything that happens around you. As a matter of fact, I never did much planning ahead, and as we arrived to the venue, I just followed along a sort of ‘general draft line’ leading to a few areas of particular interests.

Name a few: there were warbirds

P-38 Lightning. A French pilot and writer Antuan de Sent-Exupery flew this plane during the WW II. He was killed in one of the missions. R-38 pilot

Legendary Mustangs made a pretty long line on the display Propellers

P-40. A real one! My friend Butch Foster built a 75 % P-40 replica. Still flies it once in a while. P-40

North American B-25 Mitchell. During the World War II numbers of them were flying in the Soviet Air Force. Seeing this ‘patrol’ running by make you believe you are somewhere in a different time-space continuum.

In the warbirds area I also spotted something looking very familiar

Yak-11, a ‘trainer-fighter” - a fairly high performance aircraft purposely designed to make ‘less troblesome’ transition from ab-initio types to real combat machines in the Soviet Air Force flying schools

‘Gee! - it is only now, in America, I’ve got a chance to see this plane, the one that I wanted to build a model of when I was in my teen years’, I thought approaching the plane in excitement. It is amazing! Thank you, Oshkosh! Thank you, all true aviation enthusiasts in America!

And Spitfire, I read about this legendary ‘defender of England’ in the years when my initial interest towards aviation was yet growing.

Or, the Flying Fortress, B-17 rumbling over he field with another load of happy riders

Among other things I wanted to see in Oshkosh were antiques, seaplanes.

Sure I’ve seen quite a few of them, and let it

Thanks for posting the great photos and descriptions. I have heard about the reputation of this show for some time. Unfortunately, have never had the opportunity to experience it.

    Keep them coming.

    Hey,

we can organize an AirVenture of our own, in Indus, in September, for example, if we get together then for Flickr reunion. Not the same size as the Oshkosh, though :) but it may be fun too. I’ll talk to Butch.

that would be a very cool show. I love the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.
Sadly, it was flying one of these in WWII when the famous French writer Antoine de Saint Exepury lost his life.

    Hi, Eric,

Yes, and I read a few things by Exupery. He was know very well in the Soviet Union.

Wonder, if Butch and his friend Ron would have their Yak-1 ready for take off by that time.. It’s coming soon.

I’ll talk to you when I get home from the pairing.

    Cheers,

    Hey,

    Nice to hear from you!
I’m glad you like this spot.
Definitely, you are welcome to visit us here in Calgary, although it is going to be a long trip. However, we have a lovely country in the Rocky Mountains area, and seeing it would worth all the effort to come over.

Keep in touch please, and send a few pics showing your project in progress; by he way, there’s a gentleman here who is going to build one of RVs as well.

    Have fun in New Jersey,

    S.

    Great!
Will send you couple pictures of my project in a week or two when fuse takes some shape. Tell your friend-RV-wannabe do not waste time, order tail kit.
Love your 35 rvs formation picture. Those guys are from California.

    Vlad,

looking forward to seeing your pics.
Here’s a photostream of my fellow from Flickr who’s going to build an RV. Read comments under this picture, we were talking about his project.

Those guys doing RVs formation were incredible. I wonder how much opportunities they had to train themselves for this formation flying, - they did great though, for ‘AMATEURS’ :) You should join them one day on your newly built RV.

    All the best,

    S.

That’s a rare spit IX, two seater… still a real thoroughbred!
I wonder what engine Vlad will install in his RV9? Subaru is worth looking into vs Lycosaurus…lol Saw/heard an RV10 recently with a Subaru H6 engine - very quiet, yet over 300hp… wow

    Hey JumpingForJoy,
I like you pictures. And approach to engines too. You like everything powerful and roaring, don’t you?
I go with Lyclone 320 carb.Made final decision at Oshkosh this year. Affordable.Subary is too complicated firewall forward.
When you plan to start your building? You can not go wrong with any RV.That red oiless monster is waiting to give you some noise and compressed air to pound those 17,000 rivets.
    Cheers,
    Vlad
