‘Kuban&Cubana’, - never heard of?

Tell you, nothing in common with Dolce&Gabbana’ :)

Yeah, sounds funny, but in fact it could be quite suitable for an ‘airline alliance’ name.. And the proposed alliance’s partners would probably find this image to be suitable as a letterhead graphic on the first page of their interline agreement, if ever such an agreement to be forged between the two :)

In fact, I used two real picture elements to create this funny ‘collage’.

And these two words, ‘Kuban’ and ‘Cubana’, - however similar they sound and are spelled, they represent two really existing entities that are way apart geographically, and I bet, not too many people in each of them know about each other.

So, my blog is probably the only spot where they may be seated together so close.

OK, what’s the deal?

‘Kuban’ is an unofficial, historic name of the region, a province in the Southern Russia, and a locally based airline took it as a part of its own name: ‘Kuban Airlines’.

‘Cubana’ is the name of the Cuba’s national air carrier. And of course, most people know where Cuba is..

And finally, if you want to know what inspired me on writing this post? I tell you, that was an aircraft I saw a couple of days ago in Cancun, Mexico.

It was the Yakovlev-42 of Cubana.

Cabana’s Yak-42 in Cancun An unexpected and inspiring redezvois with the ‘old, good’ buddy, the Yak-42, a type I used to fly in 90s..

Sincerely, it was a great surprise and pleasure for me to see this plane, - as I used to fly the type for 10 years, from 1986 to 1996, and went from the left seat on it to the same position on the Tu-154 while working for ‘Kuban Airlines’.

This rendezvous reminded me also another one, - a seeing of the Kuban’s Yak-42 in 2004 in Yerevan, Armenia.

I worked then for Aeroflot (left Kuban for it in 2002), and as it turned out, it was a ‘farewell sighting of the “Kuban’s aircraft, - for in less than a month we went to Canada..

(To be continued….)
